Driving impressions of the Skoda Kodiaq: The ideal road trip car
The new Skoda Kodiaq is a fantastic choice for families and the perfect companion for your road trip!
If you're looking for a comfortable, practical and economical family SUV, then the Skoda Kodiaq is probably already on your watch list. The current model has been able to convince many critics, so we grabbed one and used several months to see how it performed.
If you have already put the Kodiaq on your wish list, then everyday usability will be at the top of your priority list. With a 910-liter trunk, you'll lack everything except space in the trunk. We use the Kodiaq as a camera support for our videos and the equipment can be easily accommodated.
But there is also enough space for passengers in the rear, and in the front row of seats, the numerous adjustment options for the seat and steering wheel ensure optimal comfort for you. Storage space for small items such as keys, mobile phone or even coffee in the cup holder is also at the start.
In terms of technology, the Kodiaqs offer a 13-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto as standard. The operation is also simple and intuitive due to the clear layout and the good response time of the display. Unlike the Volkswagen Tiguan, the Kodiaq still has physical buttons and control knobs for the air conditioning, so the ideal room temperature can be set without distractions. Almost a rarity in the interior of more modern cars.
After we have made ourselves comfortable, we finally want to go on tour and we have collected several thousand kilometers in the Skoda over the last few months. In the city, the Kodiaq is not as unwieldy as you might expect from its dimensions. A good overview and the full set of surround cameras ensure that the Kodiaq also fits into tight parking spaces.
But the Kodiaq only really shines on the highway. There it can fully play to its strengths as a comfortable vehicle for long distances. Sometimes we are behind the wheel for up to 10 hours a day due to filming, but the comfortable seats and comfortable chassis with cozy suspension make for a pleasant driving experience with little disturbing noise.
Our vehicle is equipped with the 2.0 diesel engine and all-wheel drive, so it has more than enough power to overtake. But at full throttle the engine gets louder. In terms of consumption, we still managed just under 6 l/100 km on a distance of more than 450 km in winter. Diesels are no longer as popular as they used to be, but the Kodiaq on long distances offers good arguments for it.
If you think more carefully about what you expect and need from a road trip car: comfort, suitability for everyday use, good fuel consumption and an easy-to-use cockpit. The Kodiaq has all of this with it, making it a good choice. It may not look as stylish as a Peugeot 5008, but the Kodiaq is an honest workhorse and it's hard to beat in that.
